Welcome to the Pearl of Africa! Arrival at Entebbe Airport, where you will be welcomed by a Mandrill African Safaris representative and transferred to your Hotel in Kampala.
Cassia Lodge is located on the slopes of Buziga Hill with beautiful views of Lake Victoria and the Hills of Kampala the airy, relaxed rooms come with balconies, flat-screen TVs and minifridges, in addition to en suite bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. Amenities include a restaurant, a bar and a terrace with lake views, as well as an outdoor pool.
Very early in the morning we leave Kampala for a long journey towards the western part of Uganda. It is a full day drive but via a scenic route. On our way we will pass the Equator where you may take a photo or shop for a souvenir. Have lunch in the calm town of Mbarara and proceed through the verdant countryside. You will pass traditional homesteads and have panoramic views of the surroundings.
Ichumbi derived from the local Rufumbira dialect means ‘a cool, comfortable home ‘. The lodging facility that is just 10 minutes’ walk to Rushaga gate of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, has a spectacular view of the park right from your room! It is designed to provide you with high end comfort and relaxation to be able to enjoy your Gorilla tracking experience, go birding watching and enjoy forest life surrounded by impressive landscape. The lodge provides 13 Luxury Cottages, each cottage has en-suite facilities with hot showers and a private balcony to enjoy the spectacular view of Bwindi forest and beautiful landscapes. Being in a mountainous country side, the lodge harvests rain water which is collected in large water tanks.
Of the over 800 mountain gorillas worldwide, Bwindi National Park is home to almost half of the gorilla population. There is no better place for observing these gentle giants from a close distance! Thanks to the wildlife conservation program, the number of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest only has increased from 300 to 400 in the recent years, which include nine different families that are habituated for tourism purposes. Apart from the famous residents, the dense forest hosts 9 other primates. There are different trails in the park, including the Munyanga River Trail and Waterfall Trail, leading through the pristine rainforest to three sparkling waterfalls.
Arise early today and prepare for the highlight of your safari, an unforgettable encounter with the Gentle Giants!
Following breakfast, transfer to the national park offices where you will be allocated a gorilla family in groups of 8 as well as a gorilla tracking guide. After a pre-tracking briefing by your guide touching on the gorillas generally, your assigned gorilla family as well as appropriate safety precautions, you drive to the trailhead for the start of a thrilling adventure. Expect to walk between 2 and 8 hours in steep and sometimes muddy conditions with rain overhead, which can be tough and require a degree of (average) fitness. However, the thrill of coming face to face with a giant Mountain Gorilla silverback completely makes up for the effort!
Please remember to bring your passport for registration, appropriate, water proof hiking boots and a light rain coat. To protect from stinging nettles, we recommend long pants and long-sleeved tops. A pair of old gardening gloves can help grabbing onto the vegetation while most hotels/lodges provide a walking stick that come in very handy especially when hiking downhill. A small waterproof backpack is an excellent idea to carry a light snack, bottled water as well as protection for your camera.
Upon sighting the gorillas, you spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life; feeding, moving, playing, raising their young and sometimes wrestling with the juveniles – it is a totally unique and unforgettable experience!
Dinner and overnight at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge – Cottage (B-L-D)
We transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park The scenic route runs through a verdant countryside while you pass traditional homesteads and farms. A game drive on our way to the accommodation in the middle of the national park gives us the chance to spot waterbucks, warthogs and other wildlife.
After lunch we take on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural channel between Lake Edward and Lake George. Thanks to the elephants, buffaloes and hundreds of hippos, this cruise will definitely be one of the highlights of your safari.
Located on a peninsula within the heart of the Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mweya Safari Lodge is surrounded by the magical Rwenzori Mountains aptly described as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’. To the east, lie the guardians of the birthplace of mankind, the Great Rift Valley hills, separated from the Mountains of the Moon by the meandering Kazinga Channel. Here the water flows endlessly into two giant lakes – Lake George and Lake Edward.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular, accessible and most scenic park. Primarily associated with open savannah, it has the largest recorded mammal species in comparison to other parks in the country. The park stretches to the west by the remote Ishasha River and along the shores of Lake Edward, to the north by Kasese and the crater- dotted foothills of the Rwenzori to the east by Lake George, the Kyambura Gorge and to the south the Kigezi Wildlife Reserve.
Transfer to Kasese town and get started for the Rwenzori marathon. Good luck with the Race! Whether you are a professional athlete or a running enthusiast, there is a spot for you at the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese, Uganda.
