Discover what a day in Volcanoes National Park is like as you track endangered mountain gorillas. A once-in-a-lifetime Rwanda safari experience with Mandrill African Safaris.
Tucked in the misty highlands of northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s most magical wildlife destinations. Famous for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas, this lush park offers visitors the rare chance to trek through a thick tropical forest and come face-to-face with one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
At Mandrill African Safaris, we specialize in creating life-changing gorilla trekking experiences, and this blog gives you a detailed look into what a day in Volcanoes National Park looks like when you’re tracking mountain gorillas.
The day begins bright and early. After a restful night in one of the comfortable lodges near the park—such as Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, or Virunga Lodge—you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast.
You’ll want to wear long-sleeved clothing, hiking boots, a hat, and gardening gloves for protection during the trek. Be sure to pack your essentials: water, snacks, insect repellent, and a rain jacket in your backpack.
By 6:30 AM, your Mandrill African Safaris driver-guide will be ready to transfer you to the Kinigi Park Headquarters, located just outside the park entrance.
Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you’ll be welcomed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) rangers. Coffee and tea are usually served as guests gather.
At 7:00 AM sharp, the day begins with an important briefing. Here’s what happens:
You’re placed in a group of 8 trekkers, assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and preferences.
A professional guide provides essential information about the gorilla family you’ll visit, the rules of tracking, and how to behave in their presence.
Porters are available (highly recommended) to help carry your backpack and assist during the trek.
With a guide, ranger, and porters, you’ll set off on your gorilla trek. The trail winds through bamboo forests, dense vegetation, volcanic slopes, and muddy paths. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla group that day.
Along the way, your guide will share insights about the park’s biodiversity, including other primates, bird species, and flora. The scenery itself is spectacular—lush forest, dramatic peaks, and cool mountain air.
This trek is not just about reaching the gorillas. It’s about immersing yourself in the unique ecosystem of Volcanoes National Park.
Suddenly, the ranger gives the signal—you’re close. You’ll leave behind your backpacks and walking sticks (gorillas can perceive them as threats) and approach the family group.
Then, the moment you’ve been waiting for: your first glimpse of mountain gorillas in the wild. It’s an emotional experience.
You’ll spend one hour with the gorillas, observing them as they:
Feed on leaves and fruits
Care for their young
Play and interact
Rest and groom each other
It’s not unusual to be only a few meters away from a silverback, the dominant male, or to see mothers with infant gorillas clinging to their chests. The gorillas are used to human presence but remain wild, and every encounter is peaceful and magical.
Photography is allowed (no flash), and your guide will help ensure you capture these once-in-a-lifetime moments without disturbing the gorillas.
After the hour is up, you’ll begin your descent, retracing your steps through the forest. Depending on the gorilla group’s location, you may be back by early afternoon.
Upon returning to the park headquarters, you’ll receive a gorilla tracking certificate—a souvenir of your unforgettable adventure.
Many travelers describe this as the most emotional and fulfilling wildlife experience of their lives.
Mandrill African Safaris arranges for a delicious lunch at a nearby lodge or picnic site. It’s the perfect time to relax, relive the adventure, and share your experience with fellow trekkers.
You may also choose to visit the Dian Fossey Museum or simply return to your lodge for a hot shower and rest.
Depending on your energy and interest, your day in Volcanoes National Park can continue with these optional activities:
Learn about Rwandan culture, traditional dances, cooking, and crafts in this interactive community tourism initiative. A perfect way to support conservation through community empowerment.
If you have another day in the park, consider tracking golden monkeys, another endangered primate species found in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park.
