Discover the thrilling adventure of gorilla tracking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Mandrill African Safaris offers tailor-made tours to see endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
If you’ve ever dreamed of locking eyes with a wild mountain gorilla, deep in a misty rainforest, gorilla tracking in Rwanda is your golden ticket. Nestled in the Virunga Mountains, Volcanoes National Park is home to one of the last remaining populations of endangered mountain gorillas. A trek through this lush jungle isn’t just a wildlife experience—it’s a life-changing adventure.
At Mandrill African Safaris, we offer expert-guided gorilla tracking tours in Rwanda that combine thrilling encounters with responsible tourism. In this blog, we’ll walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and why Volcanoes National Park should top your travel list.
Rwanda is one of only three countries in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild—the others being Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offers unmatched accessibility, luxury accommodations, and a highly organized tracking experience.
Located just a 2-hour scenic drive from Kigali International Airport, Volcanoes National Park makes it possible to do a gorilla trek in just one day—ideal for those on tight schedules.
Here’s why gorilla tracking in Rwanda is worth every penny:
High Success Rate: Over 95% chance of encountering gorillas.
Well-Trained Rangers: Knowledgeable guides and trackers ensure safety and unforgettable experiences.
Luxury Options: Top-notch lodges like Bisate Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, and Virunga Lodge.
Commitment to Conservation: Rwanda reinvests gorilla permit fees into wildlife conservation and local communities.
Gorilla tracking is not your average nature walk—it’s an immersive journey into the heart of Africa’s rainforest. You’ll hike through bamboo forests, across volcanic slopes, and through dense vegetation in search of a gorilla family assigned to your group.
Your Mandrill African Safaris guide will pick you up early in the morning and transfer you to the Kinigi Park Headquarters. After a short briefing from park rangers, you’ll be divided into small groups of 8 and assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families in the park.
Depending on the location of the gorillas, the trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours. While some treks are short, others demand endurance. The terrain can be muddy, steep, and uneven—but the reward is worth the effort.
Once you find the gorilla family, you’ll have one magical hour to observe them up close—eating, playing, grooming, and interacting. You must stay 7 meters away, but often, curious juveniles may come closer. It’s a raw, humbling, and deeply emotional moment.
You can track gorillas year-round, but the dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best hiking conditions. Trails are less muddy and photography is easier thanks to clearer skies.
That said, the wet seasons (March to May, October to November) tend to have fewer tourists, and you may find gorillas closer to the base of the mountains—making for shorter treks.
Gorilla permits are required and must be booked in advance. Each permit allows one hour with a gorilla family and costs $1,500 per person (as of 2025). Mandrill African Safaris handles the permit process for you, ensuring a hassle-free experience.
Book your permit at least 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during peak season.
To make the most of your trek, bring the right gear. Here’s a recommended packing list:
Hiking boots (waterproof, sturdy)
Long-sleeved shirt and trousers (for protection against nettles and insects)
Rain jacket or poncho
Gloves (gardening gloves help when grabbing plants or vines)
Hat and sunglasses
Insect repellent
Energy snacks and bottled water
Camera (no flash photography allowed)
Mandrill African Safaris also provides walking sticks, porters (available for hire), and additional support for those who need it.
